Quality control is one of the most important aspects of sourcing from China. Without proper inspection processes, you are trusting that your supplier will deliver exactly what you ordered, every time.

At CPG, I implemented a three-stage quality inspection process for all our Asian suppliers. In my experience, the during-production inspection was the most valuable stage — catching issues when they can still be fixed without scrapping finished goods. I have seen too many buyers skip this step to save a few hundred dollars, only to end up with thousands of dollars worth of defective products.

Why Inspections Matter

The distance and time involved in international trade make quality control essential. If a problem is discovered after goods have shipped, the cost and complexity of correction are much higher.

Pre-Production Inspection

The first inspection happens before production begins. The inspector reviews raw materials, component specifications, and the supplier’s production plan. This stage catches potential issues before they become problems.

During-Production Inspection

The second inspection happens while production is in progress, typically when 30 to 50 percent of the order is complete. This is the most valuable inspection because problems can still be corrected without scrapping finished goods.

The final inspection happens after production is complete, before shipment. This inspection follows AQL sampling standards.AQL 2.5 is the most common standard for general consumer products.

Appearance checks look for surface defects and color consistency. Functional tests verify that products work as intended. Dimensional measurements confirm that products meet specified tolerances. Packaging checks ensure that packaging is correct.

Third-Party vs. In-House Inspection

Third-party inspection companies like SGS or Intertek provide independent verification. Some buyers develop their own inspection capabilities, which can be more cost-effective for frequent orders.

Final Thoughts

Quality control is an investment that pays for itself many times over. A small inspection fee is insignificant compared to the cost of receiving defective products.
