One lesson that stands out came early in my career at CNBM International, when a client chose the cheapest supplier against my advice and ended up with a shipment of substandard products that took months to resolve. That experience reinforced my belief that in sourcing, you get what you pay for.

Mistake 1: Choosing the Cheapest Supplier

Always order samples before committing to bulk production. A product that looks good in photos may have quality issues that are only apparent when you hold it.

Be specific and put everything in writing. Use drawings, photos, and reference samples. Confirm understanding by asking the supplier to summarize what they will produce.

Mistake 4: No Quality Control

A simple three-stage inspection process catches issues at each stage and prevents problems before they reach your customers.

Mistake 5: Underestimating Lead Times

Add at least two weeks of buffer to your estimated delivery timeline. You will be pleasantly surprised when things arrive on time.

Mistake 6: Not Protecting Intellectual Property

Register patents and trademarks in China. Include confidentiality agreements in your contracts.
