Ceramic tiles are one of the most popular building materials imported from China. Understanding how to evaluate tile quality helps you select the right products.

Understanding Tile Grades

Grade A tiles are first-quality with consistent dimensions and uniform color. Grade B tiles may have minor variations. Grade C tiles have more noticeable variations.

PEI Rating Explained

PEI 1-2 for walls only. PEI 3 for light residential flooring. PEI 4 for all residential and light commercial. PEI 5 for heavy commercial traffic.

Water Absorption Classifications

Porcelain tiles have less than 0.5 percent absorption. Glazed ceramic tiles have 3 to 10 percent. Terracotta has above 10 percent.

Check rectification, shade variation, and surface defects. Place multiple tiles side by side to check color consistency.
